"Doviak's first single "Solid State Machines" from his debut EP "Enemy Numbers" is an intriguing ride to a sonic landscape that oscilates between a dark atmosphere and a bittersweet hopefulness, ultimately leading to an ambiguous upifting sense of pressure. Doviak's excellent production skills shine specially with the mixture and blending of an alternative oriented sound that remind of elements from Interpol and Depeche Mode creatively and balanced in fusion. This track is very effective in communicating a sense of pressure or even urgency as it steadily keeps growing in energy to reach a very elevating but dark chorus. The vocals are inerestingly prodcuded with a modest lo-fi treatment that instantly grabs your attention, and the dark melodies and dramatic tones fit just right in the mood of the entire song. Also worth mentioning is that Doviak recently worked in the hit albums by Jhonny Marr (ex-The Smiths), so you are going with a fully experienced musican and producer, and it's very clear to aknowledge that with this great quality of a release. Solid state Machines is essentially an lofi synth pop track that looks at the increasing intrusion of technology into our lives, and casts a cynical eye on the nonchalance with which we allow ourselves to be surveilled. The Chorus 'Under the loving gaze of solid state machines' is a reference to the Richard Braughtigan poem 'machines of loving grace'.
The track begins with a pulsing 808 kick that slowly develops into an infectious moog synth arpegio, topped off with melancholic but dark vocals.
