"There is a certain alchemy at work when a four-minute track can be as unyielding as an industrial freight train and as quietly shiny as a star. One need only hear “Star Ruler (dry mix)” to know that something of cool quality has emerged.

The artist behind it, Sunny C, is an independent from Belgium who has made no apologies for the territory she occupies between EBM, coldwave & dark electro. This particular offering is a rework of material first put out on the Alvida Odia album, but do not mistake it for a superficial technical polish. It is a fresh reconstruction of the original, one that has put some new character on a sound that was already captivating.

From a production standpoint it is creative and dynamic. You are met with some deceptively playful synth lines over a whirring, mechanical sort of soundscape, until a percussive pulse starts to pick up speed. Then comes the sequenced EBM bassline and it is quite the weapon: a rolling, relentless thing that has you in a hypnotic groove, evoking the best of Front 242 or early Nitzer Ebb without ever losing its own identity. The violin is a welcome and rather beautiful intrusion of organic warmth in an arrangement that is otherwise mercilessly mechanical. By the time you reach the second half, the heavier percussion and spacey synths have turned the whole affair into something of a cinematic ride.

The vocal performance is as assertive as they come, with an euphoric and punkesque attitude, the perfect fit for this style of track. There is no reverb to hide behind; the voice has a dry and edgy authority that commands the front of the mix, and the lyrics — with their blunt references — make their point with force.
“Star Ruler (dry mix)” has the air of 3am under a vast, uncaring sky, all isolation and forward motion. It is the sort of track that is at home in a strobe-lit dance floor as much as it is for the headphone purist, and its extended running time allows it to develop in a manner shorter club numbers cannot.
We would recommend you give Sunny C a listen if you have an appreciation for electronic music of a darker, more driven eclectic nature."

INSIDE THE TRACK: [artist's commentary]

“Star Ruler” started from a track ON MY FIRST ALBUM "ALVIDA ODIA" THAT I still really liked: the bassline, melodic structure and overall identity were already there, but I felt the production was not fully supporting the energy of the composition. For the new version, I rebuilt the vocals AND PARTS OF THE PERCUSSION AND SYNTHS while keeping that original core intact. I wanted the track to feel harder and more focused without losing the melody, which is probably the most important element in my music. I also deliberately moved away from the more processed vocal sound I used in the past. The vocals on this version are much drier and more exposed because I wanted them to sound more human rather than disappear into effects. The title itself is simpler than it may sound.IT mostly came from my interest in space imagery and the sense of scale and power in the phrase. the track reflects something I keep coming back to in my music: trying to make different qualities belong together. Physical rhythm and concentrated listening, harder production and melody, precision and something more human underneath it.
